Finding a comfortable reading rhythm

3 min read

Notes on line length, contrast, and the spaces between paragraphs.

The paragraph is the starting point

A reading layout is easier to judge with real text than with a collection of headings. Place two or three paragraphs on the page first. Then adjust the size, line height, and measure until the text feels calm.

Give the eye a place to return

A line that runs across the whole screen makes it difficult to find the beginning of the next one. A moderate text column leaves useful margins on a large display and naturally becomes a single column on a phone.

Use contrast with purpose

Body text needs clear contrast against its background. Dates and captions can be quieter, but quiet should not mean hard to read. It is worth checking the page in daylight, at a reduced brightness, and with the browser zoomed in.

Let spacing do some of the work

Not every section needs a border or a different background. Consistent vertical spacing can explain the structure on its own. A small gap links a heading to its paragraph; a larger gap makes the next idea feel distinct.
